Your JBSA Lawyer at Every Joint Base San Antonio Installation
Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) is the largest joint base in the Department of Defense, managed by the 502nd Air Base Wing. It brings together three primary locations — Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, and Randolph Air Force Base — along with additional operating locations such as Camp Bullis, Camp Stanley, and Martindale Army Airfield. JBSA is home to roughly 80,000 members, supports a total military and civilian community of more than 250,000, hosts more than 200 mission partners, and trains more Department of Defense students than any other installation in the country.
Because JBSA spans Army, Air Force, and other service commands, cases are investigated by Army CID, Air Force OSI, and Navy NCIS — and a single installation can involve different service regulations and overlapping jurisdiction. Fort Sam Houston is the Army’s medical hub and home to Brooke Army Medical Center, the DoD’s largest hospital and only Level I trauma center; Lackland is the Air Force’s sole site for enlisted Basic Military Training and a center for cyber and intelligence operations; and Randolph hosts Headquarters Air Education and Training Command. When you are accused at any JBSA location, the government already has experienced trial counsel and investigators building the case against you. A dedicated JBSA lawyer from Military Trial Defenders knows how these cases are investigated and prosecuted in San Antonio — and how to fight them, from investigation through court-martial.

The Three Types of Court-Martial at JBSA
Military courts-martial operate at three levels, each handling different offense severities and carrying very different maximum punishments. Understanding which one you face is the first step in building a defense:
Summary court-martial. Handles minor offenses through streamlined proceedings, with limited maximum punishment such as up to 30 days of confinement and reduction in grade for junior enlisted members.
Special court-martial. The intermediate level, roughly comparable to a civilian misdemeanor court. Maximum punishments include up to one year of confinement, a bad-conduct discharge, and forfeiture of two-thirds pay for up to a year.
General court-martial. Reserved for the most serious, felony-level UCMJ offenses. A general court-martial can impose the maximum penalty for the charged offense — up to a dishonorable discharge (or dismissal for officers), total forfeitures, lengthy confinement, and, for a small number of offenses, life imprisonment.
A general court-martial is normally preceded by an Article 32 preliminary hearing, and every court-martial is governed by the Military Rules of Evidence and procedures unfamiliar to most civilian attorneys. Our JBSA lawyers defend service members at every stage — from the investigation and Article 32 hearing through a contested trial and any appeal.
Administrative Actions That Can Derail Your Career
Not every threat to your career comes through a court-martial. Many careers end through administrative actions that require only a lower standard of proof — and a dedicated JBSA lawyer can make the difference in each of them:
- Nonjudicial punishment (Article 15 / NJP). You can often accept NJP or turn it down and demand trial by court-martial — a decision with lasting consequences you should never make without a defense attorney’s advice.
- Administrative separation and discharge boards. The government only has to meet the preponderance-of-the-evidence standard, and the characterization you receive — Honorable, General (Under Honorable Conditions), or Other Than Honorable — can determine your access to VA benefits for the rest of your life.
- GOMORs and adverse paperwork. A General Officer Memorandum of Reprimand or a negative evaluation can end a career even without a conviction. We prepare rebuttals and challenge filing decisions.
- Boards of Inquiry and Show Cause boards. Officers facing elimination are entitled to a board, where we present evidence, cross-examine witnesses, and argue for retention.
- Command investigations. AR 15-6 and comparable investigations often precede any charge. Getting counsel involved early can change the outcome before it starts.
What a Conviction or Discharge Can Cost You
Texas has one of the largest concentrations of military personnel in the country, and each installation has its own investigative anThe stakes in a JBSA military justice case reach far beyond the courtroom. A conviction — or even an administrative discharge — can follow you for the rest of your life:
- Reduction in rank and total forfeiture of pay and allowances
- Confinement in a military corrections facility
- A punitive discharge — bad-conduct or dishonorable discharge, or dismissal for officers
- A federal criminal conviction that appears on background checks for life
- Mandatory sex-offender registration for many Article 120 offenses
- Loss of military retirement, VA benefits, and the GI Bill
- Loss of your security clearance and future government or contractor employment
